Business GameTM: Preparing Your Team To Face An Inevitable Crisis

How can the Business GameTM help companies and professionals alike survive in times of crises?

During times that depress trade and business, like the recent World Economic Crisis, sales and management teams can become demotivated because in order to reach their personal and company strategic goals, they find that they have to operate and succeed in an environment that is much more complex and deviant than expected. In the prevailing situations, the team’s productivity suffers prolonged down-turns due simply to the fact that they are attempting to achieve within a foreign and difficult environment that stems from unexpected events. Due to these new complexities, the team needs to apply far more sales rigor to achieve outcomes that might have been considered meagre in earlier times. Typically sales people will apply the old adage of shoulder to the grindstone but still the goal post seems further and further beyond their reach. In this kind of environment productivity ultimately suffers a severe down-turn and frustration soon turns to fatigue and a sense of under-achievement prevails. The team becomes demotivated and the lackluster performance of the team perpetuates the downward spiral.

Leaders find that they too are operating in exactly the same kind of environment where they can’t offer solutions as they lack the experience essential to inspire and motivate their teams in these new conditions. Leaders can react in a myriad of ways that might range from apathy to anger as they require from their team results that the team can’t deliver. Everyone from CEO’s, Executives, Managers and Department Heads crave a solution in these new circumstances or a guiding light that can develop their staff to foster new skills where they can seize control of their environment once again and rebuild the foundations prior to the crisis. What is the solution? How can the company develop their staff when those within the company do not have the expertise to pass down to those they manage?

The low performance of teams becomes the inherent responsibility of the leader of the team. How can the company hierarchy improve their perspective and develop real time strategies to deal with these situations proactively?

Chess Masters will always play many moves ahead, roleplaying every possible move his or her opponent might conjure in this masterful game of strategy. Before a chess piece is moved every possibility is considered, every chance factorized into his or her thinking to optimize the chances for “Check Mate”. What attracts so many highly intelligent individuals to this game is their understanding of the game craft that develops between the two combatants as they each apply their own strategies based on their own predictions; predictions based on what? Experiences accrued over many years of mastering this complex game.

It’s a fact that:

1 – One must have a deep knowledge of the game. If the player knows every rule of the game and combines experience derived from multiple engagements with a range of highly skilled players, he or she will understand how the strategies within the game must be applied for the best of outcomes. Regular exposure to a variety of conditions and situations allows the combatant to develop basic game plays in response to set moves by his or her opponent.
2 – Winners must develop an understanding of his or her opponent. Generally advanced players develop a sense of their opponent’s skills as they continue to make their moves based on the game plan that is set before them, they can decipher a standard player easily from one who demonstrates advanced competencies; demonstrating the ability to anticipate and respond and act proactively to establish an environment that guarantees ultimate success. Advanced players develop a sense to predict trends and move accordingly; this can be the difference between success and failure in difficult environments.
3 – Winners will always demonstrate resilience We all must begin as standard players and it is essential to learn from our mistakes. Games, like Chess, encourage the identification and realizations of bad decisions and then players learn from their mistake and move on, with new experiences in hand. New skills are learned and new strategies developed that may be applied in similar situations in the future, a stronger more well equipped player results.

Let’s stop and take a minute to review this information. Can you see any similarities between this scenario and your own work situation? How then might we develop this kind of experience in a trading market scenario that results in low risk management with sound results, goal achievement and financial prosperity? High risk in a crisis is completely unacceptable.

The answer is to SIMULATE the environment one’s teams must perform in. The simulation should represent many years of known market scenarios and teach teams quickly how to develop winning strategies with low risk. With a game centred approach teams develop:

– A holistic vision of the market place
– Real time perceptions and recognition of opposition strategies
– Developed understandings of the importance of resilience, patience and the utilization of prevailing calm during crisis.
